Welcome to the BetterRef.com weekly prep for the upcoming Basketball season. Each week, we are going to highlight a topic to help get you ready for a successful season. This week, let’s take a look at your appearance. We are only 39 days from November 1, and the season will soon be knocking at the door. As Alexander Graham Bell said, “Before anything else, preparation is the key.”
Check your Body
This tip is #1 because this is the one that will take the most time. Did you add a few pounds over the summer? You can’t “check your appearance” the week before the season starts and expect it to make a change. It starts now! Are you a member of a gym where you can work on your cardio, core, and leg strength? Is your weather conducive to jogging a few miles 3 or 4 times a week? The decision is yours’s but do something! Remember, the older we get, the longer it takes to get in shape to keep up with high school athletes.
Check your Gear
It doesn’t matter what your body looks like if you look sloppy in your uniform. Does the shirt still fit? Is it “like new” or do the stripes look faded? What about your shoes? Will they carry you through another season? Will they take care of your feet? Remember, one of the tenants of officiating is that your credibility is affected by your appearance. This can be an easy fix – make sure your uniform looks good on you!
Check your Court Presence
Now that you have your body in shape and you look good in your gear, all you have to do now is make sure your court presence is solid. There are several things that go into making your presence on the court look its best. The most important is using approved mechanics that a sharp and crisp. Practice working on your mechanics in the mirror (yes, even you veterans). Watch some game tape of yourself from the past year and find several mechanics that could be improved. We all have some signals that can be improved. Your appearance on the court will be greatly improved just by focusing on your signals.
Confidence also has an affect on our court presence. Improve the appearance of your body, your uniform, and your signals and you will be feel good about yourself on the court!
